Kiran Sarkar (née Das), an esteemed alumna of CMC Vellore's 1963 Batch, dedicated her life to alleviating the suffering of those affected by leprosy. Born into a family deeply rooted in medical service, Kiran left an unforgettable impact on everyone she encountered.

Career and Contributions

Kiran's journey began at the Dichpalli Leprosy Hospital and continued at CMC Vellore where she specialised in Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery under Dr Selvapandian.

Marrying Prakash Sarkar in 1974, she then served at TLM Purulia for a decade, transforming it into a primary Leprosy Surgical Centre nationally. Her work here and subsequent roles at other hospitals corrected deformities and treated countless individuals, drastically improving their quality of life.

Devotion to Service

After a brief hiatus to focus on family, Kiran was persuaded to return to TLM Purulia in 1990 by Dr Cornelius Walter. She continued her vital work, performing hundreds of surgeries annually, not just at Purulia but also as a visiting surgeon across India, until her retirement in 2004. Even after retirement, she continued serving her community in Purulia until 2020.

Kiran's life was a testament to her faith, her family, and her unyielding commitment to The Leprosy Mission. Known for her warmth and the joy she brought to life, her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched.
